Help with searching

The Hornsby Herbarium is designed so that it can easily be searched by both the non-expert with a general interest in plants, but little or no botanical knowledge, and the botanist who wishes to carry out specific searches using botanical names. The search page is thus divided into the General Search for the non-expert and the Botanical Search for the botanist:

Search boxes

Both types of search are carried out in the same way, by selecting options from the dropdown lists in the field name boxes. In the following example, the downward-pointing arrow on the General Type box has been clicked to display the options:

When you select an entry in a dropdown list, it is entered into the Your search box. In the following example, 'Cycads' has been selected from the dropdown list in the Classification box:

Once you have a search term in the Your search box, you can click the Search button to begin your search of the Hornsby Herbarium database.

Clearing searches

If you make a mistake when creating a search string, or decide to carry out a different search, click the Clear Search button to delete all the text from the Your search box and start again.

Carrying out more complex searches

More complex searches are built up by selecting from two or more dropdown lists and by using Boolean terms (AND, TRUNCATE, OR, NEARBY, EXCEPT, WILDCARD). Choose from the following links for help in using these features:
